Funeral services for Noemi Perez, the Cal State Bakersfield distance runner who was killed in a car crash Sunday night, will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Arvin Funeral Home, 600 Tucker St.
A viewing will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Perez, a member of the CSUB track and field and cross country teams, was a mathematics major at CSUB and a 2008 Arvin High graduate, where she was the school's Female Athlete of the Year her senior year.
BASKETBALL
The Bakersfield College men's basketball team has moved up five spots to No. 12 in this week's top 20 California Community College Coaches Poll.
The Renegades (21-7) are third among ranked teams with an 87.1 per-game scoring average.
Fresno City College (29-0), the only undefeated team in the state, remains No. 1. Every other team in the state has at least four losses.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Cal State Bakersfield women's soccer coach Nicole Van Dyke has added seven players to next fall's squad.
The newcomers are three transfers and four incoming freshmen.
The transfers are Denise Hernandez from Fresno City College, who helped the Rams to back-to-back Central Valley Conference titles and was her team's top offensive player last season; goalkeeper Kymberly Gause from Modesto Junior College, who had 134 saves and allowed only 23 goals last season and will have three years of eligibility remaining; and Tara Corcoran, a defender who helped Cerritos College win its second straight state title with a 22-0-4 record.
The incoming freshmen are Samantha Pena from Bakersfield High, who can play midfield or forward; defender Raquel Gervas from Upland High School; and two Ridgeview High graduates: Brittany Thomas, a forward-defender; and Yesina Reyes, a forward.
FOOTBALL
Two members of last season's Bakersfield College football team have earned JC Grid-Wire All-Academic honors.
They are inside linebacker David Halopoff, a first-team All-Western State Conference pick who carries a 3.77 grade point average as an engineering major, and tight end Zac Lewis, a second-team All-WSC pick with a 3.8 GPA as a business major.
