Bicyclist killed on highway
BRUNSWICK, Ga. --- A Brunswick man was killed Monday morning when a vehicle hit his bicycle on U.S. Highway 17 North in Glynn County.
Mikeal Hodges, 18, was riding a bicycle south along the highway about 12:30 a.m. when he was struck, said Cpl. William Nease of the Georgia State Patrol.
Mr. Hodges died at 1:21 a.m. at Southeast Georgia Health System's Brunswick hospital, Coroner Jimmy Durden said.
The vehicle that struck Mr. Hodges fled the scene, but about seven minutes later Georgia State Trooper 1st Class Marlon Groover stopped a white Honda Accord with a broken headlight and other front-end damage, Trooper Nease said.
The driver, Enrique Martinez, 24, of Brunswick, was arrested and charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle, hit-and run, driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license and having an open container of alcohol in the vehicle, Trooper Nease said.
Additional charges are possible in the collision, which remains under investigation by troopers, he said.
