PALMYRA - A local teenager was killed in a car-bike accident around 8:15 p.m. Sunday.
State police said Matthew Bray, 17, was riding his bicycle on Hogback Road when he was hit from behind by a vehicle driven by Anibal Fontanez, no age or address available.
Fontanez fled the scene but turned himself in to the Newark Police Department about two hours later, police said. He was charged with felony DWI,
felony aggravated unlicensed operation, first-degree vehicular man-slaughter, felony leaving the scene of a fatal accident and various other charges.
District Attorney Rick Healy was on the scene and will be meeting with state police investigators today to discuss the ongoing investigation. Healy said Fontanez was arraigned in Palmyra Town Court this morning and is being held at Wayne County Jail without bail. He said he expects the charges to be brought before a grand jury in the next 45 days.
The maximum penalty
for first-degree vehicular manslaughter is 5 to 15 years in prison.
Joan DeCann, chair of the counseling department at Palmyra-Macedon High School, said the school psychologist and counselors were being made available for grief counseling both at the school and in homes. She said the school regularly provides presentations for students on the dangers of drunk driving and expects to tie something about the accident in with their pre-prom discussions.
DeCann said that Bray was not currently attending the school; he was in an alternative education program - part vocational training, part GED training.
She said that Bray's father was a U.S. Marine and the teenager had hoped to follow in his footsteps.
