A drunken driver was sentenced Monday to five to 15 years in prison for a high-speed crash that killed a 17-year-old youth and injured his friend.

Kristian Kemp, 40, pleaded guilty in January to felony charges of second-degree manslaughter and second-degree vehicular assault, plus a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated.

Matthew Kato, a high school junior, was killed July 21 in the crash in the Rochester suburb of Henrietta. His 17-year-old passenger, Shawn Elliott, was injured.

Kemp had two previous drunken-driving convictions from the 1980s. He initially was charged with second-degree murder, but prosecutors, with the agreement of Kato's family, accepted the plea to the lesser charge.

Prosecutors said Kemp had a blood-alcohol level twice the legal limit and was traveling at least 89 mph in a 40-mph zone when his sports car hit Kato's vehicle.
