18-year-old Deland man on moped struck and killed by driver suspected of DUI

An 18-year-old Deland man on a moped was struck and killed at Sunday morning in Volusia County.

Nicholas Eason was riding a 2013 Honda moped westbound on U.S. 92 on the right lane, while 39-year-old Craig Howitt of Port Orange was driving a 2000 Nissan Xterra on the same route behind Eason, according to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report.  Howitt failed to slow down as he approached Eason, striking the rear of Eason’s moped.

Eason was thrown onto the hood of Howitt’s vehicle and then thrown off as Howitt kept travelling westbound, only stopping briefly and fleeing the scene the report stated.

Eason was transported to Halifax Medical Center where he died from injuries suffered in the accident. Howitt was arrested for leaving the scene of the crash and DUI manslaughter. He was booked at the Volusia County Jail.
