‘A tragic accident’: Cullman JV baseball player dies in car crash that may have involved alcohol

died in a three-car crash over the weekend on Cullman 222 near Good Hope, according to The Cullman Times.

Wilson’s mother, Ashley, 43, was also injured in the crash, and another driver, 27-year-old Bradford Meeks, of Cullman, was also injured.

"The Cullman Bearcat family has a very heavy heart today," Cullman City Schools Superintendent Susan Patterson said in a prepared statement to the Times. "A tragic accident took the life of student and Bearcat baseball player Curtis Wilson. It is impossible to understand when a life is taken at such a young age and words can't express what we all feel. The loss of this young man will be felt throughout the Cullman community for years to come. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family."

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported in a news release that the crash happened at 6 p.m. on Sunday, about a mile west of Good Hope. Curtis Wilson was a passenger in a 2004 GMC, which collided head-on with a 2008 Ford driven by Bradford Meeks.

"Although the circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation," an ALEA news release said, "preliminary investigation indicates alcohol may have been a  factor in the crash."

The Times reported that Curtis and his mother were wearing seatbelts. Ashley Wilson is apparently hospitalized.

Grief counselors are on hand today at Cullman High, and Troopers are investigating the crash.

The Bearcats swept Decatur in Saturday's AHSAA Class 6A quarterfinals, winning 4-1 and 2-1 to move into this week's semifinal round. Cullman will play the winner of today's game between Hueytown.

Cullman baseball coach Brent Patterson said in an email that it's unclear whether the team will honor Wilson during this week's semifinal series.

"Trusting in the Lord right now," Patterson wrote in an e-mail. "Holding on to the faith that it is all in His hands, even though we can never understand it."

The Times also reported that the Curt Wilson Memorial Fund has been established Traditions Bank of Cullman.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday at 7 p.m., at Daystar Church, with visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., before the service. Burial is set for Thursday, at Simcoe Methodist Cemetery at 10 a.m.
