OREM — A Pleasant Grove woman was charged Wednesday with hitting another car that was pulled over on the shoulder of I-15, killing an elementary school teacher and her teenage son.
Kesley Pope, 22, is charged in 4th District Court with two counts of automobile homicide, a second-degree felony.
Just after midnight on Sunday, a Kia passenger car had run out of gas and the driver pulled off I-15 onto the shoulder near the 800 North off-ramp in Orem. The Kia's emergency hazard lights were on, charging documents state.
Pope was driving a Toyota pickup truck when she smashed into the Kia. Tobias "Toby" A. Dow, 16, of American Fork, and Season M. Dow, 43, of Eagle Mountain, were killed. Season Dow was a third-grade teacher at Brookhaven Elementary.
Pope failed field sobriety tests and her blood-alcohol level was measured at .10%, or twice the legal limit, according to the charges.
The deaths were two of 10 fatalities on Utah's roads during the Halloween weekend.
A GoFundMe account* has been created by the family to help cover funeral and medical expenses. Any leftover funds will be used to take care of Season's two other children, the post says.
