Sentence Handed Down to Drunken Driver
(Grand Haven) - Kevin Babcock will have some time to think about his actions this past summer.
Ottawa County Circuit Court Judge Calvin Bosman handed down a 25-to-40-year prison sentence yesterday to the 44-year-old Wyoming man. Babcock had pleaded no contest to various charges stemming from the June 27th incident in which he slammed a group of bicyclists trying to cross US-31 at Quincy Street. Two 19-year-old men from Zeeland, Curtis Jacobs and Christian Van Wyngarden, were struck, with Jacobs dying the following day, and Van Wyngarden suffering serious injuries.
Authorities say that Babcock had a blood alcohol level twice that of the legal limit, and was reported to have been weaving in and out of traffic prior to the crash. He only surrendered after a police chase up US-31.
This was the fifth drunken driving offense over a 23-year span for Babcock, including two other crashes that injured three persons. He agreed to not contest the charges in this case, which included second-degree murder, in exchange for not receiving a life sentence.
